A Gran Turismo movie is on the cards from Sony, with Neill Blomkamp being lined up to direct the film.

Sony’s PlayStation Productions studio is really motoring at the moment. Uncharted released earlier this year to decent reviews and a solid box office performance and we’ve already been assured that we’ll be getting a follow-up. Production is also well underway on a prestige TV series based on the critically-acclaimed game series The Last Of Us that will be with us next year, not to mention the Ghost Of Tsushima adaptation slated to be directed by Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick films.

Playstation Productions isn’t done there though, and it looks like it’s bringing one of its biggest guns to the table next in the form of a Gran Turismo adaptation.

The long-running driving simulator series is one of PlayStation’s biggest titles although it lacks any real narrative, meaning that whomever comes in to take the reins will have a licence to do what they please in terms of story. And that rumoured filmmaker is an interesting pick too, none other than District 9 director, Neill Blomkamp.

We can see how Blomkamp’s style could be an excellent fit for a visceral, high octane driving movie although whilst we hope that if his rumoured involvement is true, there are a lot of film fans out there who won’t want the project to stop him from getting the long-awaited sequel to District 9 made first. Last we heard on that one, he was writing the script alongside star, Sharlto Copley.

The Gran Turismo project is said to be in the very early stages of development, with Deadline also reporting that other stories circulating about an additional TV series are wide of the mark. We’ll bring you more news on this one as we hear it.
