Star Wars: Disney approaching Taika Waititi to develop new film

When he’s done with Thor: Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi has the option of a Star Wars movie.

There’s now no new Star Wars film in cinemas for just under three years, as Disney rests the franchise on the big screen. There’s some course correcting work to do in the aftermath of Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’s release, and it’s unclear as of yet who will be steering the next film.

It’s known that Rian Johnson has been approached to develop a new trilogy of films, and more recently, Game Of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D B Weiss backed away from their own Star Wars project. Marvel chief Kevin Feige is developing a film, too.

But now we learn that Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit director Taika Waititi has been approached to take on a Star Wars film. It follows too his work on the TV series The Mandalorian.

Whether Waititi takes the project on is another matter, of course. There’s been no official word from either him or Disney on the approach, and the waters may not become clear with regards Star Wars for some time.

As for Waititi, his immediate priorities are the two films he’s directing. He’s been filming Next Goal Wins of late, and then he moves onto Thor: Love And Thunder for a late 2021 release.

More as we hear it.
