After a decade of development, The Trainer is coming together with a promising creative team behind it.

Following ten years of languishing in development hell, The Trainer is finally heading into production. The film ‘takes place over the course of eight days of “sleep-deprived chaos” following an unlucky fitness trainer named Jack (Schnabel). Tired of living with his mother in Los Angeles, he tries to make one last serious go at fame and fortune.’

The Trainer is finally set to enter production in early April in Los Angeles. Vito Schnabel takes the lead in the project, having also drafted the screenplay. Schnabel doesn’t have too many credits to his name, although he did star in Harmony Korine’s The Beach Bum. Julia Fox of Uncut Gems is set to co-star, whilst The Sopranos’ Steven Van Sandt will also feature.

Whilst both the casting and the premise are interesting enough, the involvement of Tony Kaye is intriguing too. Kaye is the credited director on 1998’s American History X although the battle for the director’s chair in that movie are well documented. Kaye hasn’t really worked on anything nearly as high-profile since, preferring smaller projects over which he has full control. Despite being an independent production, The Trainer may well represent a step back towards a scale of filmmaking that we haven’t seen from him in a couple of decades.

We’ll let you know more about The Trainer as we hear it.
