Tenet and Top Gun: Maverick set for UK release clash: which will blink first?

Will Tenet and Top Gun Maverick really come out on the same day in the UK? We’re betting not.

Looking down the cinema release schedules for the coming summer, there’s a heavyweight clash and a half currently earmarked for Friday 17th July.

Appreciating that the summer schedules are slightly skewed due to the European Football Championships taking place, two massive blockbusters are currently arriving on one day, and that’s surely going to change.

As things stand, Warner Bros is to release Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and Paramount has Top Gun Maverick down for the 17th July. It’s unfeasible for two of the biggest films of the summer to release on the same day, and it looks like a case of which distributor will blink first. One of them surely has to move.

Not that there’s too much wiggle-room. The week before both Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Minions 2 are on the schedule, and Disney’s Jungle Cruise starring Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson lands the week after.

Were we betting people, which we’re not, we’d suggest that Warner Bros is most likely to budge, given that Top Gun at the least has a heavy in-built audience, and on paper looks the less commercially risky.

That said, Top Gun Maverick is out a couple of weeks earlier in the US, on 26th June, so may have more flexibility. And also, Tenet already feels like it’s going to be very special indeed. It’s certainly right near the top of many people’s want to watch lists, ours included. Warner Bros has long since staked out the 17th as its global release day.

It seems untenable that two massive films aimed at roughly the same spot of the audience will converge on the same day. We’ll keep you posted…
