Director Gavin O’Connor confirms The Accountant 2 is back on – and it looks like The Accountant 3 might be on the way as well.
Remember The Accountant? That’d be the action movie that starred Ben Affleck all the way back in 2016 as a man who, bluntly, was an accountant. But also someone with high functioning autism, who on top of that doubled as an assassin. It was a hit film too, and at the time there was talk of a sequel being developed to it. Five years later, that sequel is now pressing ahead.
Director Gavin O’Connor confirmed the news to CinemaBlend, whilst also suggesting that a third film is coming too. “We literally just closed that deal”, he said of The Accountant 2.
Jon Bernthal is going to return alongside Affleck, and, in O’Connor’s words, “I’ve always wanted to do three”, noting that with the third film, “we’re going to integrate his brother into the story. So there’ll be more screen time for Bernthal in the second one. And then the third movie’s going to be, I call it, ‘Rain Man on steroids’ The third movie is going to be the two brothers, this odd couple. The third one is going be a buddy picture”.
Given the problems with the depiction of autism in the film Rain Man I’m not entirely sure that describing a film as “Rain Man on steroids” is particularly useful. That notwithstanding, two more Accountant films are on the way. There’s a spreadsheet joke here, but I can’t quite find it…
