Ben Affleck on his struggles with drink that led to him departing The Batman.

Had the world taken a different turn, Ben Affleck – who played the character in three films – would have been taking the lead in the now-filming The Batman. He was also set to write and direct the movie too, before ultimately stepping away.

He’s opened up now as to why in a new interview with the New York Times. And it was his well-reported battle with alcoholism that ultimately led to him departing the film.

“I showed somebody The Batman script”, he recalled. “They said ‘I think the script is good. I also think you’ll drink yourself to death if you go through what you just went through again’”.

The ‘what he just went through’ was in part his experience on the troubled production of Justice League, which would be the last time that he played Batman.

He says that his biggest regret was his marriage falling apart in the midst of his drinking. The full interview can be found here.

The Batman is now shooting with Matt Reeves directing and Robert Pattinson in the title role.
