Suicide Squad’s David Ayer signs up to direct Jason Statham in The Beekeeper as he fights baddies and, well, keeps bees.

It’s been a few months since we first heard that the mighty Jason Statham was to take his action roles in a new direction by tending to some bees. But here we are, many months later, and the project is moving ahead.

It’s an action thriller going by the name of The Beekeeper, that Kurt WImmer has penned the screenplay for. He’ll also be producing, alongside The Statham himself.

The project (set up at Miramax), we learn has landed a director. David Ayer, the helmer behind the likes of End Of Watch, Suicide Squad (the first one), Fury and Bright has signed on the dotted line for the film.

It’s now being sold at the Cannes Film Festival, where buyers will be teased with the idea of Statham keeping bees and kicking ass. He’s expected to turn to the film once he’s done shooting The Meg (filming in the UK).

More on Bees Vs Statham in due course.
