Musical icon Rita Moreno is to join the Fast and Furious family, signing up to the ensemble of Fast X.

Rita Moreno, arguably one of the most prolific performers of the American theatre and film, having has roles in West Side Story, Singing In The Rain and The King and I, has joined the ever expanding Toretto clan. She will play the grandmother of Vin Diesel’s Dom.

The news was announced via a video posted on Diesel’s Instagram page. Diesel said that “It’s been my dream forever to work with Rita Moreno, and the fact that she’s here playing my grandmother makes my soul smile. I’m so blessed.”. Moreno added that “I think my old age was waiting for you to invite me”.

The actress, who boasts the rare achievement of winning all four of the major American accolades for performance – an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony – joins what is becoming one of the most eclectic all star casts in franchise cinema.

Already announced are core cast members Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Sung Kang and Nathalie Emmanuel. It was announced recently that Scott Eastwood would be reprising his role as Little Nobody from 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, while Charlie Theron is also back as the villainous Cipher.

Jason Momoa has been cast as the new antagonist (it is not yet known if he is playing another secret brother/cousin/son), while Brie Larson, Daniela Melchior and Alan Ritchson have been cast in as yet undisclosed roles.

Fast X hit the headlines earlier this month when director Justin Lin walked away from the project due the all encompassing excuse of “creative differences”. The film is now being helmed by Unleashed and Now You See Me director Louis Leterrier.

It is set to be released on 19th May 2023.
