Paging the awards season: two Oscar winners come together for The Father, and the first trailer for the movie has now landed.

Are we at the point where we start talking awards season films yet? Because this certainly seems to be one. We’re talking about The Father, a new movie starring Oscar-winners Olivia Colman and Anthony Hopkins.

Also in the ensemble are Rufus Sewell, Imogen Poots, Olivia Williams and Mark Gatiss, with the film directed by Florian Zeller. Zeller also wrote the script with Christopher Hampton.

And now we have the official first trailer and synopsis for the movie as well. So we’ll just crack on and pass them onto you. The trailer is first, and it looks like this…

The official synopsis meanwhile reads as follows…

In THE FATHER, Anthony Hopkins plays the eponymous role of a mischievous and highly independent man who, as he ages, refuses all assistance from his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman). Yet, such help has become essential following Anne’s decision to move to Paris with her partner. As Anne’s father tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and even the fabric of his reality.

The only release date we have at the moment is ‘2021’, which tells you more about the fluid state of the cinema calendar than anything else right now. More as we hear it, though.
