Paramount will be releasing all three Godfather films on the 4K Blu-ray format – but the releases look set to be over a year away at least.

Rumours have been swirling for some time now that Paramount Pictures was working on a 4K release for Francis Ford Coppola’s trilogy of Godfather movies. Speculation has ramped up with the news that the studio is releasing a new cut of the third movie in the series this winter, that goes by the name of Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death Of Michael Corleone.

That’s set for DVD, Blu-ray and video on demand release (we don’t have the UK release details as of yet). But The Digital Bits has been digging into whether a physical 4K release of the films is planned anytime soon. Turns out the answer is yes, but sort of.

The films are indeed being planned for the 4K disc format, but not for a couple of years yet. As per Paramount’s statement to the site, “In anticipation of the 50th anniversary of The Godfather in 2022, Paramount is working on restoring all films in this franchise, preparing for new home entertainment releases including 4K UHD physical and digital releases. More details will be released at a later date”.

The terrific The Digital Bits can be found here, and do give it a click if you can.
