Leigh Whannell looks set to direct Universal’s new take on The Wolfman, with Jason Blum boarding as one of the film’s producers.

After its well-charted attempt to launch an expensive Dark Universe of linked horror movies came to a start and end with 2017’s The Mummy, Universal struck gold earlier this year by letting Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions team have a go.

Specifically director Leigh Whannell who, having scored a success with the underseen yet terrific Upgrade, who then wrote and directed The Invisible Man which proved a hit earlier this year. Now, Blumhouse has been invited by Universal to tackle more classic monster films, and the long-in-gestation new take on The Wolfman is next on their roster.

This was to be a Dark Universe story at one stage, but now is set to be a more economical production. Ryan Gosling has been attached to this one for a while, and Leigh Whannell has now boarded to write a treatment for the movie.

Once he’s done that, it gets handed over to Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who will pen the screenplay for the movie. Whannell is then in line to direct the picture too.

No word on a release date or when the film will head into production. But as we hear more, we’ll let you know…
