When Love Is Gone is gone no more: the complete version of The Muppet Christmas Carol is on the way.

Here’s some very, very welcome news. Just a week ago, we ran a feature looking at the lost songs from The Muppet Christmas Carol. Long story short, the song ‘When Love Is Gone’ was in the original cut of the film, then it was chopped out and only appeared on early video and laserdisc versions of the movie.

It was figured missing, assumed lost.

But it seems that the lost song has been found in the Disney archives. In an interview with the BBC, the film’s director – Brian Henson – dropped two pieces of news.

Firstly, The Muppet Christmas Carol is getting a 4K remaster, presumably more for Disney+ than physical media release but we can hope.

Secondly, the song has been found. He was called into Disney to check the new master of the film, and explained to the BBC that “I was so excited. They actually hid it… so I went down and they said: ‘But before we show it to you, we’ve got something else we want to show you’. And they put up reel four of Christmas Carol with ‘When Love Is Gone’”.

When we get to see the new version remains to be seen. Henson admits it’s likely a bit too much of a tight turnaround to aim for this Christmas. But, in his words, “the full-length version is coming back”.

The full piece can be found on the BBC website, here.
