The big screen take on the acclaimed Matilda musical is pressing ahead, and Ralph Fiennes is the first addition to the cast.

Filming was set to get underway this summer, and thus that may be under threat for the minute. But there’s still a plan to make the film of the hugely-acclaimed Matilda musical, itself of course based on the much-loved Roald Dahl novel.

The creative team behind the musical – Tim Minchin, writer Dennis Kelly, director Matthew Warchus – have signed up to bring it to the screen again. It’s a co-production between Netflix and Sony, with the plan being to theatrically release the film in the UK, and Netflix taking on distribution everywhere else.

And finally, we have our first piece of casting for the picture. In the role of the boo-hiss Miss Trunchbull, Ralph Fiennes has signed up for the role. A high profile start for the film’s ensemble.

We await a start date for filming and a release date for the movie. But we’ll keep you posted as we hear more…
