Hollywood loves a musical, and here are nine headed to your screens big and small over the next 12 months.

It’s time to sing and dance, because Hollywood is in musical mayhem mode. There’s an abundance of films headed our way in the next 12 months, but the one genre that seems to be taking the lead? Musicals. There’s at least nine new musical films being released over the next year, some original and some adapted from stage. Whilst a handful are going straight to streaming services, it truly seems like the musical is having a moment – and what better way to celebrate togetherness than with a big opening number?

In The Heights

Releasing 18th June 2021 in cinemas

In the Heights is set in the titular Latinx community of New York City’s bustling Washington Heights. When the neighbourhood’s charismatic local bodega owner, and the pic’s humble narrator, finally decides to fulfill his dream of going to the island his parents called home, his departure will change his beloved block forever.’ The film stars Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera , Olga Merediz , Daphne Rubin-Vega, Stephanie Beatriz, Dascha Polanco  and Jimmy Smits.

Premiering at Cannes Film Festival in July, MUBI UK will be releasing the film theatrically on the 3rd September.

Tick, Tick… Boom!

Releasing in 2021 on Netflix

Set in 1990, tick, tick…BOOM! tells the story of Jon, an aspiring theater composer who is waiting tables in New York City while writing Superbia – which he hopes will be the next great American musical and finally give him his big break. Jon is also feeling pressure from his girlfriend Susan, who is tired of continuing to put her life on hold for Jon’s career aspirations. Meanwhile, his best friend and roommate Michael, has given up on his creative aspirations for a high paying advertising job on Madison Avenue and is about to move out. As Jon approaches his 30th birthday, he is overcome with anxiety – wondering if his dream is worth the cost.

Cyrano

Releasing 14th January 2022

An upcoming American-British musical drama film directed by Joe Wright and written by Erica Schmidt, based on Schmidt’s 2018 stage musical of the same name, itself based on the 1897 Edmond Rostand play Cyrano de Bergerac.
