Lionsgate is making a new The Hunger Games movie, and Francis Lawrence has been confirmed as returning to direct – details here.

Lionsgate is definitely pressing ahead with the new film in The Hunger Games series, a prequel story that’s set decades before the original trilogy of novels. That trilogy of novels turned into a quartet of movies, the last three of which were directed by Francis Lawrence.

Now we learn that Lawrence, as had been rumoured, will be back in the director’s chair for the next film.

The movie – The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes – will tell the story of President Snow, albeit as an 18-year old before he became the ruler of Panem.

The book itself will be published first, and that’s out in May. Suzanne Collins has penned it of course, but this time she’ll be co-writing the screenplay for the film with Michael Arndt.

There’s no word yet on casting or a release date, although it sounds like the project is ready for pre-production work once the current situation has lifted. Some early work has already been done.

We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.
