The final nominees for this year’s BAFTA Awards have been announced – Denis Villeneuve’s Dune leads with 11 nominations.

Dune, The Power Of The Dog, and Belfast have received the most nominations for the 2022 BAFTA Awards. The full list of nominees has now been announced, with a good variety of films represented (though there are also some surprising omissions and inclusions). Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci-fi blockbuster ensures that mainstream cinema is well-represented as it leads the way with 11 total nominations. These include Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.

Jane Campion’s slow-burn rumination on masculinity, The Power Of The Dog, has eight nominations. As well as a Best Picture nom, Campion has been put forward for Best Director. Benedict Cumberbatch is up for Best Actor, and perhaps surprisingly both Kodi Smit-McPhee and Jesse Plemons have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. It was announced earlier this week that Smit-McPhee is also competing for the Rising Star Award, for which Lashana Lynch and Ariana DeBose are also nominated.

Among the nominees there is a noticeable lack of Kristen Stewart and Spencer, the Pablo Larrain-helmed Princess Diana biopic that Stewart starred in. The film debuted at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, and Stewart gained widespread acclaim for her performance. It has been largely assumed that she would be a surefire awards contender, but it seems she may be out of the race.

Adam McKay’s divisive comedy/disaster film Don’t Look Up has also picked up some nominations, including Best Picture, Original Screenplay, and a Best Actor nod for Leonardo DiCaprio. Those nominations are sure to be as divisive as the film itself.
