The Secret Garden picked up by Sky Cinema in the UK

The terrific upcoming big screen adaptation of The Secret Garden will now be debuting in the UK this October.

Gah. One of the last films I got to enjoy an early preview screening of before all this stuff happened was StudioCanal’s upcoming retelling of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden. The film is directed by Marc Munden, and its cast includes Dixie Egerickx, Colin Firth and Julie Walters. The wonderful Jack Thorne has penned the screenplay for it, too.

What’s more, and I’ve still no idea when I can post an official review, I absolutely loved the film. It’s really very lovely, wonderfully done and  a big screen treat. The problem being it’s not clear now when we’ll get to see it on the big screen.

The family adventure was originally planned for release in April, and then got put back to August 14th. Now, sadly, that date has been dropped amidst uncertainty of enthusiasm to physically visit a cinema. The plan is to put it back on the release schedules in the autumn, and I for one hope that happens.

UPDATE: Progress! The Secret Garden has now been picked up by Sky Cinema. It has announced a new release date of October 23rd, and it’ll be unleashing the film both in cinemas on that day, and on the Sky Cinema service.

Do keep an eye out for this one. It’s the best new live action family film I’ve seen all year, and more news on it as it lands.
