The Souvenir is not only getting a sequel, it’s arriving next year

Joanna Hogg has already filmed a sequel to the incoming The Souvenir, in spite of Robert Pattinson dropping out due to Batman duties.

Reviews have been excellent for the incoming The Souvenir, from the brilliant British director Joanna Hogg. The movie lands in UK cinemas on August 30th, with a cast led by Tilda Swinton, Honor Swinton Byrne and Tosin Cole. Expect to hear a lot about the movie in the coming weeks.

Hogg based the film on her memories of being a shy film student, and growing up in the 1980s. And the plan was for a second movie to follow, that Robert Pattinson was to star in.

That plan is still on, just with a casting change.

Robert Pattinson has now committed to playing Batman for Matt Reeves in the upcoming The Batman. Hogg, however, is pressing ahead with The Souvenir Part II, and is splitting the role that had been earmarked for Pattinson into two characters. Charlie Heaton and Harris Dickinson will take those roles on, and Joe Alwyn has also signed up for the ensemble of the new film.

The Souvenir Part II isn’t wasting time, either. The film wrapped filming earlier this summer, and the plan is to get it released in 2020. Distributor A24 holds the rights to the film in the US, and we await news on its UK release. More, of course, as we hear it.
