The Swimmers starts production in the UK

Netflix and Working Title announce production has started on The Swimmers.

Directed by Sally El Hosaini, The Swimmers has started production in the UK, as announced by Netflix and Working Title.

The Swimmers tells the true story of swimming sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini’s miraculous journey as refugees from war-torn Syria, all the way to the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The roles of Yusra and Sarah Mardini will be played by Lebanese actresses and real life sisters, Manal and Nathalie Issa.

Writer/director Hosaini’s last film My Brother the Devil (2013) premiered at Sundance Film Festival winning the World Cinema Cinematography: Dramatic prize before securing El Hosaini the Best British Newcomer prize at the BFI London Film Festival and Best European Film at Berlinale. It’s currently available to watch on Amazon Prime. She has written the screenplay for The Swimmers alongside Jack Thorne (Enola Holmes).

With filming scheduled for the UK, Turkey and Belgium, The Swimmers is slated for release on Netflix globally in 2022.
