Before he landed the Uncharted movie role, Tom Holland was circling an idea to do with James Bond 007.

The long-awaited movie release of the video game adaptation Uncharted, lands next month, with Tom Holland leading the cast as a young version of the cocky fortune hunter, Nathan Drake. The project itself has been in development for what seems like many years, with Nathan Fillion and Mark Wahlberg both attached at certain points, with things never quite coming together.

However, with Tom Holland in the role, Uncharted made it into production and will be with us in just over a month. The film’s path to production with Holland in the lead role has an interesting wrinkle though: the actor only really began considering the possibilities for the Uncharted movie following a failed pitch to take on the role of a young James Bond.

“I had a meeting, after or during Spider-Man 2 [that’d be Far From Home], with Sony to pitch this idea of a young Bond film that I’d come up with,” the actor revealed to told Total Film, by way of GamesRadar. “It was the origin story of James Bond. It didn’t really make sense. It didn’t work. It was the dream of a young kid, and I don’t think the Bond estate were particularly interested.”

However, the experience proved useful for the actor, who began to think of the Uncharted project in the same light. Shifting the film to an origin tale for Nathan Drake seemingly gave the project the film forward momentum it needed, according to Holland. “The idea of a young Bond film sparked this idea, in turn, that you could do a Nathan Drake story as an origin story, rather than as an addition to the games. And that opened a conversation.”

Uncharted also stars Mark Wahlberg as Sully, Drake’s mentor, Sophia Ali, Tati Gabrielle, Antonio Banderas, and Pilou Asbaek.

Ruben Fleischer directs from a screenplay by Rafe Judkins.

On the subject of 007, do you think Holland would have made a good Bond? It’s certainly possible that his time in the tuxedo will come, and the actor has openly said it would be a dream role for him. You’ll be able to see Holland putting his action chops to the test when Uncharted releases on February 18th.
