Zendaya and John David Washington star in Netflix’s Malcolm & Marie, a pandemic-shot, awards-tipped drama – here’s the trailer.

Netflix has dropped the trailer for what may yet be the film that scoops up plenty of gongs when awards season hits.

Malcolm & Marie is a sumptuously-shot black and white two-hander, featuring the heavyweight talents of Zendaya and John David Washington. What’s more, the film story behind this one is interesting too, with director Sam Levinson putting the project together in short order to keep his crew employed when shooting on his TV show, Euphoria, was delayed because of the pandemic.

Even better there’s a happy ending too, as the film, which cost a couple of million dollars to shoot, was the subject of a fierce auction. Netflix triumphed, paying $30m for the movie, meaning that not only were the crew handsomely reimbursed, but the film also made a generous donation to charity with the profits.

The plot centres around an up and coming film director who has based his breakout work on the life struggles of his partner… and then promptly forgets to thank her during an awards ceremony. What follows is the aftermath, as the pair return home and begin to question the nature of their relationship.

Levinson reportedly based the plot upon a similar experience, where at an awards ceremony he forgot to thank his wife for her tireless production work on the 2018 film Assassination Nation.

You can catch Malcom & Marie on Netflix when it releases on February 5th. In the meantime, do check out the trailer below.
