Tanya Day headlines Lee Daniels’ new movie – and here’s the trailer for The United States Vs Billie Holliday.

Billie Holliday is an absolutely iconic female voice in the world of jazz music. However, her ascent to jazz legend was far from simple as she found herself a target of the US government. Authorities believed that songs such as Strange Fruit were inciting the civil rights movement. As such, she was considered to be an insurgent and in an effort to racialise the war on drugs, Holliday and her music became a target of government agencies who interpreted her songs a promoting immoral lifestyles.

A film telling this story is on its way from director Lee Daniels. It’s being distributed by eOne in the UK with a release date set for March 12th. It releases a month earlier on Hulu in the US.

Tanya Day plays Holliday, with Natasha Lyonne, Garrett Hedlund, Miss Lawrence, Rob Morgan, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Tyler James Williams in the cast. Daniels, who most recently produced Idris Elba’s upcoming Concrete Cowboy, will direct.

You can catch the trailer below ahead of the film’s upcoming release.
