It looks like a new TRON movie may finally be on the way.

Had history not taken a different turn and the Marvel Cinematic Universe taken off, it’s not hard to imagine that Disney would have gone ahead with its mooted plans for a TRON 3. The project was certainly in the works after the expensive revival of the series with 2010’s TRON: Legacy. But this was an era where the Mouse was searching for regular box office hits, and opted to press ahead with its Marvel purchase. Plans for a new TRON film petered out as the Marvel movies kept hitting, and Disney narrowed its slate to less risky project.

Its Disney+ streaming service, however, may just have reawakened its interest in a new TRON, that in truth too would likely be cheaper to put together than the visually striking 2010 sequel. We Got This Covered is reporting that Disney is interested in a new TRON film again, and that Jared Leto will be taking on the lead role in the movie.  It’s set to be more spin-off than straight follow-up, and the working title for the movie is TRON: Ares.

There’s certainly no word on writer, director or any of the cast at this stage. The assumption is too that this would press ahead on Disney+ rather than the big screen, but in truth, we’re filling in a few gaps there.

We’ll keep you posted as we hear more on this. Very, very early stages though, so if the project does go ahead, don’t expect official word for some time yet.
