Don’t entirely write off the chances of getting a sequel to TRON: Legacy, insists the film’s director in a new interview.

We’ve covered before, on our podcast, the story of TRON: Legacy and the battle to bring it to the screen. And with that, the plan for a sequel to the movie, that never came to fruition. You can find said podcast below these words…

However, it appears there may be a slight glimmer of hope for the seemingly-abandoned TRON 3. The director of TRON: Legacy, Joseph Kosinski, is just finishing up making Top Gun: Maverick, his second film with Tom Cruise after Oblivion. And in an interview with ComicBook, he’s admitted that interest remains in a further TRON adventure.

“There’s always been an interest since Legacy” for a sequel, he insisted. “There’s always been talk and murmuring of doing another and continuing the story. I was in China a few years ago and saw them building the TRON ride in Shanghai, which, apparently, is pretty amazing, I would love to experience that at some point”.

“I think it’s still a nice jewel in the crown of Disney IP and I think there are fans and people petitioning and pushing to continue it inside the halls of Disney. So I think it could happen”.

He added that it needs the right elements to come together at the right time, and adds that there’s no shortage of ideas as to where to take things. But right now, there’s no sign of a movie pressing ahead. Still, “there is, I think, a future for the franchise and I hope they keep making them”.

We hope so too. The full interview can be found here.
