The upcoming survival thriller Beast will star Idris Elba and a very large lion – and it’s coming to cinemas next summer.

Universal has announced the release date for its upcoming adventure film, Beast. The movie, which will star Idris Elba, charts the fortunes of a father and his two teenage daughters who find themselves hunted by a giant rogue lion in South Africa.

The film is directed by Baltasar Kormákur who helmed 2018’s Adrift. Kormákur has often employed quite a kinetic style with films like 2 Guns and Everest, so it will be interesting to see what he does with a giant lion.

Elba has of course seen it all throughout the course of his career, including taking on both The Rock and The State in the Fast & Furious spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw, so we’re not sure what kinds of problems a colossal predator will pose. Plenty, we hope.

The announced release date for the film is August 22nd, 2022. Little else known about the project , other than it is a survival thriller in the same vein as the 2016 shark survival surfing movie, The Shallows, that featured Blake Lively. Whatever shape the film takes, we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
