Eugene Levy, Christopher Guest and Catherine O’Hara star in a comedy treat that’s finally making it to Blu-ray in the UK – more details here.

There’s a good chance that most of you reading this won’t have heard of the 1990s comedy Waiting For Guffman. I can’t say for sure it even got a cinema release in the UK, and if it did, it wasn’t much of one. Yet also, I’d argue this is one of the funniest films of the decade, and the finest movie from Christopher Guest as director.

Guest of course has directed the likes of Best In Show and A Mighty Wind since, both of which are also excellent. But the story of an amateur dramatics group on a small American town putting on a musical to celebrate said town’s birthday is an absolute treat. Those of you enjoying Schitt’s Creek on Netflix have further incentive to check the film out, given that Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara lead the ensemble.

But also in there – along with Guest himself – are the brilliant Parker Posey, the late, great Fred Willard, and the quite sublime Bob Balaban.

The film has now been selected for the HMV-exclusive Premium Collection of releases, and it’ll be available on Blu-ray in the UK from July 27th. Extra features include a commentary track from Guest and Levy.

Can’t recommend this film enough. You can find out more about it at HMV here.
