We’ve had The LEGO Movie, now we’re set to get Funko: The Movie too.

Well, can’t say I saw this one coming. Appreciating that Warner Bros has enjoyed success with a selection of movies based on LEGO, the news now lands that it’s optioned another range of popular toys to bring to the movies.

Said toys are the Funko Pop! range, which in turn are primarily based on film and TV characters. And Warners has now hired director and designer Teddy Newton to work on the film alongside The Emperor’s New Groove helmer Mark Dindel.

Funko boss Brian Mariotti told Deadline that “we’re thrilled for this opportunity and are committed to make an amazing Funko movie that stands on its own merit. This isn’t about selling toys or building a brand. The team at Warner Animation Group have a unique vision of what the first film should be and we are extremely excited to take this journey alongside them”.

There you have it. It’s definitely not about selling toys or building a brand. Good to know.

The movie is very much in its early stages at the moment, and it’s coming under the Warner Bros animated movie branch. As such, the Funko film is still likely years away.
