First details have sprung up about the new Dungeons & Dragons films, and just what’s going to be happening in it.

We’ve been lucky enough to see the internal plot description for the new Dungeons & Dragons film being used in-studio, and can now share it with you.

First, the official blurb – and then we’ll see if I can flesh it out at all.

An ex-Harper turned thief escapes from prison with his partner, a female barbarian, and reunites with a no-talent wizard and a druid new to their team in an effort to rob the cheating conman who stole all their loot from the heist that landed them behind bars, and used it to install himself as the Lord of Neverwinter. Only the traitor is allied with a powerful Red Wizard who has something far more sinister in store. Being directed by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley, and starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez.

Hugh Grant is the antagonist, but that’s probably the Lord of Neverwinter rather than the Red Wizard? More sure is that Michelle Roriguez is the barbarian and Chris Pine is the thief and ex-Harper.

So, let’s be honest, the first thing we had to Google is what a Harper might be. They are, the official D&D website says, “an old organisation that has risen, been shattered, and risen again several times.” An organisation of what, exactly? They sound like a cross between the CIA and a guild.

Officially, Harpers have three key beliefs.

  1. One can never have too much information.
  2. Too much power leads to corruption.
  3. No one should be powerless.

So what does this mean for an ex-Harper?

The plot description manages to include both a jaibreak and robbery, which sounds like it could be a lot of fun. We’ll keep our ears close to the ground and report back if we learn any more.
