From the writer of Bohemian Rhapsody comes a film telling the life story of Whitney Houston – and an auction for the project has now been won.
TriStar Pictures, part of the Sony Pictures empire, has emerged victorious in the battle for the planned Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody. The project has been in gestation for a while, with Bohemian Rhapsody scribe Anthony McCarten writing the screenplay for it. And it got to the point where it went on the auction block.
McCarten had picked up the rights option himself to get the project started, and several studios and streamers were interested in acquiring the film. TriStar has emerged victorious, and it acquires McCarten’s script, and the work that he’d done in getting the music rights sorted too.
Stella Meghie is already set as the director of the film, but now there’s the not inconsiderable task of finding someone to take on the lead role.
The plan is to release the movie towards the end of 2022, so time is currently on its side. As we hear more about the project, we’ll let you know.
