The first two names join the cast, as it finally looks as though the Wicked musical might be getting off the ground.

Finally, finally, finally it looks as if the long-mooted movie of the musical Wicked is getting somewhere. A week or two back we learned that filming had been delayed again, but that the plan now was to shoot the film in the UK next summer. Jon M Chu has stepped in to replace Stephen Daldry, the latter of who was attached to direct for some time.

Based on the hit West End and Broadway musical, Wicked is finally at the casting stage, and the first two names have jumped aboard the project too. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are taking on two of the lead roles, Glinda and Elphaba. That still leaves some big roles to cast, but it’s hard to argue that it’s not strong signal of intent for the film’s casting.

More as we hear it. Universal is backing the film, and our best guess at the moment is a late 2023 release. No date has thus far been announced.
