The BBC’s flagship film programme, Kermode & Mayo’s Film Review, will end on April 1st 2022: this is not a joke.

We’re a bit in shock here, and hoping this is an early April fool’s joke, but fear that’s not the case (in fact, we’re certain it isn’t).

Simon Mayo has just announced on BBC Radio Five that Kermode & Mayo’s Film Review will finish on the station on April 1st. He specifically said “on Five Live”, but he’s also clear that it’s the decision of Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo to step away from the show.

April 1st will be the last show “on Five Live”. There are hints from the pair that there may be other things ahead, and reading between the lines I do wonder if they’re taking the show to another station. The pair both work for Bauer radio stations – Greatest Hits Radio and Scala – and I do wonder if there’s a new show heading there? But again, that’s guesswork on my part. (Kermode is co-host of Screenshot on Radio 4, so will still be allowed into the BBC)

What’s certain is that a Five Live institution, and the nation’s flagship film programme, reaches the end of an era in just under a month.

Will the BBC replace the pair? Surely that’s impossible, but you never know. Will they take their film wittering elsewhere, just with some adverts? Couldn’t tell you.

More as we hear it…
