Director Josh Boone confirms that The New Mutants is ready, over two years after production began.

On July 10th 2017, filming finally began on the film that was going to become X-Men: The New Mutants. Josh Boone was directed, hot off the back of his success with The Fault In Our Stars. And the movie finally wrapped its initial principal photography in September of 2017.

However, then the problems kicked in. Boone had always been keen to make a horror-tinged movie, and a few days of extra filming were greenlit. Then another batch of photography came to light in the midst of 2018, that was set to add new characters. Then came the news that Fox now wanted around half of the film to be reshot. Then Disney bought up Fox, and rumours bubbled up that the film wouldn’t get a release, or head to Disney+. Then came news that reshoots were planned for 2019. All the while, Boone kept working on his film.

And now, finally, it’s heading to release. Boone has taken to his Instagram page to reveal that finally, around two and half years after he started shooting The New Mutants, that the movie is in the metaphorical can. The sound mix is locked, and the film is ready for release…

New Mutants is officially done! We just locked the sound mix! Here with me – from left to right- The great Don Sylvester, sound editor of both The Fault in Our Stars and New Mutants. Psst! He also just won an Oscar for Ford Vs. Ferrari. Next up is editor extraordinaire Andrew Buckland, who I finished the film with me while my editors worked on The Stand. Psst! He just won an Oscar too! I’m the idiot in the middle with the hat. Next up is sound engineer David Giammarco – thrice nominated. Last, but not least is Emmy Award winning music editor Chris McGeary. It was a long road but this roaring beast is done and we can’t wait for you to see it! #newmutants #newmutantsmovie #marvel #marvelcomicsgang

Quite what box office business it does after all the faffing around remains to be seen. But the movie is landing in April, so we don’t have much time before we find out just how it’s all turned out. And with the move of No Time To Die to the end of the year, The New Mutants might just have a clearer chance of being a hit.

More as we hear it.
